Zwarte Piet, Yes or No

The Van Abbemuseum organises a debate about the Zwarte Piet phenomenon, in cooperation with the artists Petra Bauer and Annette Krauss. The debate is an aftermath of the commotion that arose in late August this year around the art project Read the Masks. Tradition is not Given. The project was part of the Be(com)ing Dutch exhibition in the Van Abbemuseum, and consisted of an installation, a protest march and an as yet unmade film about the Zwarte Piet phenomenon. The Van Abbemuseum found itself forced to cancel the march due to extremely negative reactions and threats of violence.

As questions of cultural identity and normative 'national' values become ever more an issue in political and cultural debate, Be[com]ing Dutch asks whether art can offer alternative examples of thinking about how we can live together today. Be[com]ing Dutch seeks to put our ideas of cultural identity under pressure and examine the process of inclusion and exclusion in the world today.
